Gerona coins catalog with values
Gerona is an ancient Herunda, a city
of the Ausetans (Iberians from pre-Roman times). The Romans
built their citadel on this site.
After them, Gerona was inhabited by the Visigoths until the
Moors conquered the city in 715.
In 785 Gerona was conquered by Charles I the Great, who made it
one of the fourteen counties of Catalonia. However, as early as
793, the Moors recaptured the city. From then until the final
expulsion of the Moors in 1015, Gerona changed hands many times
and was sacked several times.
In 878 the city became part of the county of
Barcelona. In the
11th century Alfonso I of Aragon declared Gerona an independent
city, and in the early 15th century Ferdinand I granted the
title of Prince of Gerona to his first son Alfonso.
Girona's Jewish community flourished in the 12th century. Today,
the medieval Jewish quarter of Gerona (Kall), where the
community lived, is one of the best preserved unaltered Jewish
neighborhoods in Europe.
In May 1809, Gerona was besieged for 7 months by Napoleon's
35,000-strong army. During French rule, which lasted from 1809
to 1813, Gerona became the prefecture of the department of Terce.
