Obwalden coins catalog with values online

Unterwalden is a canton in central Switzerland. The name comes from the Latin inter silvas (between the forests), consisting of two half-cantons, Obwalden and Nidwalden. The population of the canton is predominantly Catholic and remained so even at the time of the Reformation.

In the middle of the 13th century, Unterwalden allied with Uri and Schwyz to form the Old Swiss Confederation.

In 1309, the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII gave Unterwalden the same rights that its allies already had.
Soon the Habsburgs were forced to give up their lordship rights and Unterwalden became completely independent.

Politically, Unterwalden consisted of two self-governing communities, Nidwalden and Obwalden, each with its own flag and government, but Unterwalden had one vote in the confederation.

In 1798 Unterwalden was incorporated into the Helvetic Republic, with Obwalden voluntarily and Nidwalden only after being ravaged by the French army.

In 1803 Unterwalden became an independent canton again.

Since 1815 it has been part of the Swiss Confederation.
In the 1999 version of the Swiss Constitution, Obwalden and Nidwalden are named as separate cantons, while Unterwalden is not mentioned.
