Japan Military banknotes collection online

Military notes are generally referred to as military notes, and are used for procurement of supplies, salaries, etc. for troops stationed in occupied territory during wars.

Banknotes issued by the government to cover payments and other expenses.

It had no relation to the currency system of the home country and could only be used locally. Originally, it was a guarantee that bows would be replaced after the war, but most of them no longer have any value as banknotes.

Seinan no role Joesharei

In February 1898, the Seinan War broke out, and the Satsuma army asked the Kagoshima prefectural government for military funding. The prefectural government requested that the trade and finance company Seikeisha (President: Kanosuke Kiiri), which was established using prefectural public funds, provide the funds.

Since Shokeisha did not have enough cash on hand, it issued securities, borrowed cash from Tomi-sho in the city, and submitted the funds to the prefectural office. The certificate issued by Koeisha at that time is generally called the Koeisha note. It was issued in three types: 5 yen, 1 yen, and half yen, for a total of 39,968 yen, but only the 1 yen and half yen denominations exist today.

Saigo bill

In order to cover the military funds for the Seinan War, the Satsuma army borrowed money from Seikeisha through the Kagoshima Prefectural Office, but due to a further shortage, Toshiaki Kirino proposed that the Miyazaki City Hall in Kagoshima Prefecture be used as a military office, and the loan was closed for a limited period of time. For three years, fiat money was issued that was valid only within the jurisdiction. This is the so-called Saigo note, and it is a sturdy note made of two pieces of kansa (stiff, thin cloth) pasted together with Japanese paper and bracken powder glue, and printed with lacquer ink. Six types of coins were issued: 10 yen, 5 yen, 1 yen, 50 sen, 20 sen, and 10 sen.

Military Notes of the Russian-Japanese War

In 1902, diplomatic relations between Japan and Russia became tense, and these military notes were manufactured in advance in anticipation of the outbreak of war. It was issued at the same time as the declaration of war between Japan and Russia in February 1937, and was intended for use in China and Korea. For this reason, convertibility is indicated in Hangul characters on the left and right sides of the back.

Qingdao military ticket

The ripples of World War I were felt by Japan, and in 1914 Japan was asked to participate in the war against Germany based on the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. Although it was later rescinded, Japan actively pressed for the return of the German leased land in Jiaozhou Bay, and when this was refused, it declared war on Germany.

Convertible banknotes were issued in September 1919 to finance the military dispatch to Qingdao, Jiaozhou Bay.

During this period, Japan occupied German territory in the South Sea archipelago and sent troops as far as the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean region, and in November of that year, they captured Qingdao.

Siberian military ticket

At the end of World War I, a revolutionary war broke out in Russia, and the Czechoslovak army moved into Russian territory to support the imperial army. The Allied powers dispatched troops to support this effort, and Japan also dispatched troops to Siberia and northern Manchuria along with the Allied powers.

In August 1919, the government issued a Siberian troop ticket. It was a gold convertible ticket with the face value and Japanese Imperial Government printed in Russian on the front.

Sino-Japanese Incident military ticket

In the wake of the Manchurian Incident in 1931, the anti-Japanese movement in the Republic of China intensified. The Japanese military began to run on its own, dispatching troops and invading the continent under the pretext of maintaining public order. In 1937, the Sino-Japanese Incident finally broke out, and Japan entered a state of full-scale war.

At that time, Korean bank notes were circulating naturally in northern China, and in the international economic society centered on Shanghai, Bank of Japan notes were used, despite the inconvenience.

As the war progressed, the Japanese military converted Hebei notes into yen, used Rengin notes, and in the central and southern regions used Shubei notes. In this way, there were many types of coins used by the Japanese military to pay for military expenses, and military bills ranged from the military bills brought by the Yanagawa Corps on November 5, 1930, to the end of the war in 1945. , a wide variety of military bills were issued.

Here, we will follow the flow of military bonds by classifying them by format and describing their characteristics.

No. 1 ticket...The format is almost the same as that since the Sino-Japanese military ticket, and the total amount brought in by the Yanagawa Corps is said to be around 3 million yen.

Issued in September 1930, the note name, convertibility, wording, and Bank of Japan seal of the Bank of Japan notes issued in Japan at the time was crossed out with red lines, and the characters necessary for military notes were added. I reprinted it in vermilion. The No. 2 ticket was issued with the aim of banishing the counterfeit No. 1 ticket.

No. 2 ticket: The part of the No. O ticket that was crossed out with red lines was removed, and the characters necessary for the military ticket were printed in red.

To integrate military notes, we have discontinued the Bank of Japan note format and replaced it with a new design.

Hogo-go ticket...The four characters of the military handbook have been removed from the D-go ticket.

Military Notes of the Pacific War

As the Sino-Japanese Incident progressed, the Japanese military expanded its front lines from mainland China to the south. The aim was to secure important resources such as oil, rubber, and tin, and to turn various parts of the south into bases. "stone

Finally, in 1941, Japan declared war on the United States and Britain, leading to the so-called Greater East Asia War. The Japanese army expanded its front lines further and further, extending from the islands of the Pacific Ocean to Southeast Asia/Oceania.

The military notes used in these regions incorporated features appropriate to each region into their designs, and the currency unit was not the yen, but the currency unit traditionally used in each region.

Some of these military notes are small and have different evaluations depending on their symbols and numbers.

In 1932, at the same time as the founding of Manchuria, the Manchurian Central Bank was established. A new monetary system was established and new banknotes, Manchurian Central Bank notes, were issued. The various Tosan-sho banknotes that had been in circulation were exchanged and collected, and by June 1930, the banknotes had been unified into new banknotes.

15-1 (full paper 1) = modified ticket 10 yen

Until the new banknotes (A-A banknotes) could be produced, modified banknotes with vermilion stamps on the Tosan Province Government Bank banknotes were used and distributed temporarily. (5 yen tickets not yet issued)

However, Taiwan bank notes and bills payable Bank of Taiwan

After the end of the Sino-Japanese War in June 1899, Taiwan became Japanese territory. At that time in Taiwan

There was no formal monetary system, and other types of coins were mixed in circulation.

The Japanese government believed that in order to develop Taiwan's resources and develop its economy, it was necessary to establish a monetary system, and in April 1898 it promulgated the Taiwan Banking Act and began issuing Taiwanese banknotes. I did. Taiwan bank notes were then issued until 1945, after the financial crisis of the early Showa era.

(C) Korean Notes

・Since the opening of the Busan branch of the First National Bank in June 1878, Japan has become involved in Korean finances and expanded its influence. Around 1903, bills, coinslips, government minted and privately minted cupronickel coins, etc. issued by various countries were being mixed and distributed, causing confusion in the Korean economy.

Therefore, in 1902, the Japanese government and the Korean General Tax Administration and Customs Office established the Daiichi Bank Note Regulations and decided to issue Daiichi Bank Co., Ltd. notes. Later, in 1910, the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed, South Korea was renamed Chosun, and the Chosen Bank was established.

From then until the end of the war in 1945, many types of banknotes were issued by the Korean Governor-General's Office (South Korea) and the Cabinet Printing Bureau (Japan). The portrait of Jurojin, which has been printed on many banknotes since its appearance on Korean banknotes in 1919, is said to be modeled on Kim Yun-sik, a university scholar from the former Korean era.
