The West African Economic and Monetary Union (before 1994, the West African Monetary Union) unites the former French colonies in West Africa. Eight of them (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo) use a single currency, the CFA franc (Communaute Financiere Africaine - African Financial Community). Coins began to be minted in 1960. A similar currency (but of a different design) is used by the countries of the former French Central Africa.
