Saarland coins catalog with values
Saarland is a region on the border of
Germany and France, with its capital in Saarbrücken.
In the Holy Roman Empire, this territory was divided between
several possessions. The largest land owners were the Nassau-Saarbrücken
family.
During the 17th century, the Saarland was constantly invaded by
the French army, which managed to capture some territories.
After 1792, the entire territory of the Saar came under French
control and became part of the French Republic.
After the defeat of Napoleon, the Saarland was divided between
Prussia, Bavaria and Oldenburg, and since 1871 it was part of
the German Empire.
Under the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations mandate
transferred control of the Saar to France for 15 years. After
this period, a plebiscite was held, in which more than 90% of
the population spoke in favor of reunification with Germany.
After the war, France occupied the Saarland and formed a
protectorate there.
On October 27, 1956, France and Germany signed the Luxembourg
Agreement, according to which the Saarland joined the Federal
Republic of Germany. The Saar franc, which was an independent
currency, was in circulation until July 7, 1959.
