Free Imperial City of Nördlingen (1215-1803)

Nördlingen is a city in Swabia (Bavaria).
The founding date is considered to be 898, when the name “Nordilinga” first appears in Carolingian documents.
In 1215, Nördlingen was granted city rights by the Holy Roman Empire.

In the religious wars of the 16th century, the city joined the Reformation.

On 25 February 1803, an imperial law was passed which led to the territorial restructuring of the empire by annexing ecclesiastical estates and free imperial cities into larger secular estates.
In fact, this restructuring happened earlier. Thus, Nördlingen was occupied by Bavarian troops back in 1802. From 1803 it became part of the Electorate of Bavaria, and from 1806 - the Kingdom of Bavaria.
