On October 10, 1900, at the Battle of Kousseri, the French army defeated the Arab ruler of the medieval state of Kanem-Borno in what is now Chad. Chad was declared a French military territory as part of the colony of Oubangui-Chari.

On January 15, 1910, Chad was incorporated into French Equatorial Africa.

In November 1958, the country became a republic within the French Community.

On August 11, 1960, independence was declared.

Chad uses the Central African CFA franc as its currency.
