After the formation in 1929 by the Lateran Accords of the independent Vatican City State, which is a sovereign territory administered by the Holy See, and on the basis of the exchange agreement between the Vatican and Italy of December 3, 1991, on December 29, 2000 between the Vatican and Italy on behalf of The European Union signed a monetary agreement. According to him, the microstate received the right to issue euro coins and use the euro as the state currency.
Later, already on December 17, 2009, a direct monetary agreement was concluded between the Vatican and the European Union. It entered into force on January 1, 2010. For this purpose, the permitted fixed quota of issued coins for the Vatican was increased from 1.1 million in 2009 to 2.3 million in 2010.
