The Vatican City State is not a member of the European Union, however, despite this, on the territory of this state, the euro is still the official currency.
The fact is that the Italian lira for many years was a full-fledged monetary unit on the territory of this dwarf enclave state. After the formation in 1929 by the Lateran Accords of the independent Vatican City State, which is a sovereign territory administered by the Holy See, and on the basis of the exchange agreement between the Vatican and Italy of December 3, 1991, on December 29, 2000 between the Vatican and Italy on behalf of The European Union signed a monetary agreement. According to him, the microstate received the right to issue euro coins and use the euro as the state currency.

Later, already on December 17, 2009, a direct monetary agreement was concluded between the Vatican and the European Union. It entered into force on January 1, 2010. According to it, the Vatican must put at least 51% of its annual quota into circulation. For this purpose, the permitted fixed quota of issued coins for the Vatican was increased from 1.1 million in 2009 to 2.3 million in 2010. At the same time, it was decided to put 50-euro cent coins into circulation first.

The issue of coins of the Vatican is managed by the Philatelic and Numismatic Department. They are minted by the State Polygraphic Institute and the Italian Mint.
Traditionally, the portrait of the current pope is depicted on the coins of the Vatican. During the absence of the pontiff on the Holy See (in the event of his death or abdication), the so-called period of the Vacant Throne (lat. Sede Vacante) begins. For such an event, the Vatican issues coins and postage stamps of a special type with the coat of arms of the acting cardinal - the camerlengo.

During 2002-2014 The Vatican issued four types of coins.
Even before the introduction of the euro, since 1981, the Vatican lyre depicted a portrait of John Paul II by the Italian sculptor and medalist Guido Veroi (Guido Veroi, 1926-2013). He designed many coins for Italy, the Vatican and San Marino. For the national side of the 2002 Vatican euro coins, Guido Veroi has revised his own work from 1981, taking into account the change in the appearance of the pope over the years.

After the death of John Paul II on April 2, 2005, in the autumn of that year, a special set of coins was issued, known as the Sede Vacante. During the Sede Vacante period, the Camerlengo of the Roman Catholic Church becomes the chief steward.
It is his coat of arms that is depicted on the coins traditionally issued by the Vatican during the period of anarchy since the Middle Ages.
Between April 5, 1993 and April 4, 2007, Cardinal Eduardo Martínez Somalo of Spain held the position of Camerlengo. It is his coat of arms that is placed on the Vatican euro coins of the second type. These coins were designed by the Italian artist and engraver Daniela Longo.

Since 2006, a portrait of the 265th Pope Benedict XVI, elected at the conclave on April 24, 2005, has already appeared on Vatican euro coins. This portrait is also by Daniela Longo.
After the self-denial of Benedict XVI on March 13, 2013, a new pope was elected, he was a priest from Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who took the name Francis (lat. Franciscus PP).

In March 2014, Vatican euro coins of the fourth type were issued with a portrait of Pope Francis.
