Official language: Greek Monetary unit before the introduction of the euro: Greek drachma = 100 lepta
Euro introduction date: January 1, 2002

Form of government: parliamentary republic

Greece joined the euro zone just a year (January 1, 2001) before the introduction of the euro into cash circulation, so the time to design coins and issue them was limited. The National Mint did not have time to cope with such a volume of work, therefore, in order to provide the country with the necessary number of coins by January 1, 2002, it was decided to place orders for minting at the mints of France, Spain and Finland.
The current minting of coins 8.

You can determine where the coin was minted by the letter designation affixed to one of the stars around the circumference. In this case, the letter E stands for the Royal Mint of Spain, F - the Paris Mint, and the letter S - the Mint of Finland, and the sign of the Athens Mint is on all the coins of Greece, regardless of where it was minted.

All Greek euro coins are designed by the sculptor of the coinage department of the Bank of Greece, Georgios Stamatopoulos (HwpYou Eta ^ atopoi Hoi, translated into English as Georgios Stamatopoulos), each of them has its own theme. At the same time, ships are depicted on the lower denominations, great Greeks are depicted on the middle denominations, and images from history and mythology are depicted on the higher denominations.

On small coins of 1, 2 and 5 euro cents, Greek ships are depicted. The obverse of 1 cent is decorated with the image of the Athenian trireme, the largest, fastest and most maneuverable warship of the ancient Greeks. The 2 cent coin depicts The corvette was a Greek warship used in the Greek War of Independence (1821-1827). The national side of the 5 cents is decorated with a modern sea tanker, symbolizing the advanced trends in the development of Greek navigation.

The obverse of 10, 20 and 50 euro cents is decorated with portraits of famous Greeks. The 10 cent depicts Rigas Fereos (c. 1757-1798), also known as Rigas Velestinlis or Rigas Konstandinos, a Greek national hero, revolutionary poet and one of the first participants in the Greek Enlightenment. The obverse of the 20 cents depicts John Capidostrius, the first ruler of independent Greece (1827-1831). The 50-cent coin is decorated with a portrait of Eleftherios Kyriakou Venizelos (1864-1936), a famous Greek politician, in 1910-1933. served several times as prime minister.

The national side of the 1 euro is decorated with an owl depicted on an Athenian tetradrachm of the 5th century BC. BC e. Tetradrachma is an ancient Greek silver coin with a face value of 4 drachmas and weighing from 15.5 to 17 g, depending on the monetary system. Thus, the tetradrachm of the Phoenician-Rhodian monetary system had the smallest weight, and the largest - in the Attic monetary system. The minting of the tetradrachm began in Athens around 510 BC. e. It was also in the monetary circulation of Judea and Ancient Rome and was equal to 3 Roman denarii.
The 2 euro coin depicts a fragment of a Spartan mosaic from the 3rd century BC. BC e. with a scene from ancient Greek mythology. Zeus in the form of a bull kidnaps the daughter of the Phoenician king, the beautiful Europa.

Depicting ships on Greek coins is a long tradition. Right - 50 drachmas 2000 from aluminum-bronze alloy Europe is named after her. In the upper left part of the obverse of the coin above the image there is an inscription in Greek: EYPHnH (EUROPE). It is worth noting that on the national side of the Greek coins the denomination designation is duplicated, however, in Greek. At the same time, the name of the change unit "cent" is translated as "mite" - this was the name of the ancient Greek copper coin. At the beginning of the XIX century. the mite was a bargaining unit for the Greek phoenix, and from 1832 - already the drachma.
