Tokelau Islands (dependent territory of New Zealand)
Tokelau ("north wind", second name: Union Islands), an island possession of New Zealand in central Oceania. It is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. It includes 3 small atolls (Fakaofo, Nukunonu, Aiafu) in the form of an arc 480 km north of the Samoa archipelago.
All atolls have a classic shape - a ring of small coral islets (no more than 200 m wide) around a central lagoon with a thin layer of infertile soil. These islets are the overwater tops of underwater coral reefs. The atolls are low (not higher than 5 m). The surface of the islets is composed of coral fragments. The total land area is 12.2 square kilometers.
The official capital of the Territory is Fakaofo on the atoll of the same name, but each of the three atolls has its own administrative center, the same name of the island.
The Head of State is the British monarch, represented on the islands by a Governor, a New Zealand citizen. The Governor is in charge of defense, finance, foreign policy, justice and public service. The functions of the head of government are performed by one of the three "faipule" (head of the family group), rotating three times a year. The government itself (Council for the Ongoing Government of Tokelau) consists of three "Faipule" and three "Pulenuku" or "Pulenuu" (village elders, a position similar to the European "mayor").
