Principality of Pudukkottai

The principality of Pudukkottai was created by Raghunatha Kilavan Sethupathi of Ramnad (1673-1708), who appointed his brother-in-law Raghunatha Thondaiman as ruler of the area in appreciation of his services. After the death of Sethupati, Raghunatha Thondaiman remained in office and thereafter the rulers of Pudukkotai, though considered vassals of Ramnad, often pursued an independent policy.

At the end of the 18th century, Pudukkottai came under the official protection of Britain as the Tondaimans were threatened by the Mysore rulers Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan during this period.
Pudukkottai became a princely state of British India under the political authority of the Madras Presidency. In 1901 it had an area of 4663 square miles and a population of 380,000.

Raja Rajah Rajagopala Tondaiman (1928-1948), the last ruler of the Tondaiman family was crowned by the British government at the age of 6.

The Principality of Pudukkottai entered the Indian Union on April 3, 1948 and became part of the Tiruchirappalli District.
