Principality of Junagadh
The Chudasama dynasty ruled Junagadh until 1472. The city was considered one of the capitals.
In 1472 Junagadh was conquered by the Gujarad Sultanate, and from 1573 it was a part of the Mughal Empire. All this time it was not an independent state. The Gujaratis ruled with the help of a special officer. Under the Mughals, the city was the residence of the commander of the garrison of Sorat, under the viceroy at Ahmedabad.
The Sultanate of Junagadh was founded by Mohammad Sher Khan Babi of the Maratha dynasty of Gaekwad in 1730 after he conquered the city. He declared independence from the Mughal governor of Gujarat Subah, but thereafter the sultanate was a tribute to the Maratha Empire. Sher Khan Babi's descendants ruled until the state was abolished
In 1807 Junagadh became a British protectorate, first under the East India Company, and from 1818 under the direct suzerainty of the British Crown.
In 1948, at the partition of India, the last ruler of Junagadh, Mohammad Mahabat Khan III, decided to join Pakistan, despite the lack of a common border and a predominantly Hindu population. On November 9, 1947, the state was occupied by India.
A referendum on February 24, 1948 approved the state's incorporation into India.
