Kingdom of Amber (Jaipur state)

In 1727, Jai Singh II founded the city of Jaipur to make it the new capital of his kingdom of Amber (Dundhar). The kingdom was independent, but like the rest of the region had to maneuver between the major players - the Mughals and the Marathas.
In the late 18th century, Bharatpur and Kachwaha broke away from Jaipur, but the kingdom was still large and strong.
In 1803 a treaty was concluded with the British.
In 1818, Raja Jagat Singh entered into a subsidiary treaty with the British Empire by which Jaipur undertook to pay the East India Company some sum annually in return for military protection.
The state was then sometimes directly ruled by British viceroys.
Progressive reforms were introduced, with the result that by the early 20th century Jaipur had become the richest principality in Rajputana
On April 7, 1949, Raja Sawai Man Singh II signed accession to the Indian Union.
