Principality of Cambay
In 1730, as a result of the collapse of the
Mughal Empire, one of the governors, Mirza Jafar Mu'min Khan I,
became the ruler and formed his own principality of Cambay with
the capital at Khambhat (in modern Gujarat).
In 1780 Kambey was taken by the British army, but in 1783 it was
returned to the Marathas, and in 1803 it again passed to the
British after the Treaty of Bassein. Cambay became a British
protectorate in 1817. In 1901, the British built a railroad.
The last ruler of Cambay signed accession to the Indian Union on
June 10, 1948.
