Duchy of Modena and Reggio (1452–1796)
The Duchy of Modena and Reggio was
established in 1452 on the border between the
Papal State
and the Holy Roman Empire to serve as a sort of buffer between
them. The duchy was offered to the House of d'Este, who had long
ruled the city of Modena and the nearby region of Reggio Emilia.
They were also the rulers of the papal duchy of Ferrara.
In 1597 the last d'Este duke, Alfonso II, died and his holdings
passed to his cousin Cesare. He failed to retain Ferrara, as the
Pope opposed it.
In 1796 Modena was occupied by Napoleon and became part of the
Republic of Cispadana.
In 1814, after the fall of Napoleon, Duke Francis IV returned to
his domain.
The last Duke of Modena, Francis V, fled in 1859 during the
Italian Revolution, after which Modena united with Tuscany and
Parma to form the "United Provinces of Central Italy". In March
1860, the United Provinces became part of the Kingdom of
Sardinia and then the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
